Patrice O’ Neal, one of the comedians chosen to roast Charlie Sheen, had a stroke on October 19th and is currently recovering in the hospital. Sheen, who was less the target of his barbs at the roast than the other guests that were there, sent a tweet out to his followers Monday wishing his friend nothing but recovery, healing and laughter. He also encouraged his fans to respect O’ Neal and his family’s privacy during this troubled time.
O’ Neal appeared just weeks ago at the roast where he mentioned about how he was dying of diabetes. He sort of said it as a joke in response to the gentle ribbing that he got from roast master Seth McFarlane. But like any good comedian, he used the ridicule as fuel for his own bits, which were targeted at those roasting Sheen rather than Charlie himself. He even went as far as to call William Shatner racist and go after Emilio Estevez, Charlie’s brother, who wasn’t there actually. When talking about Sheen’s brother, O’ Neal said that he didn’t have tiger blood, but was donating blood for extra cash. Sheen didn’t look at all upset at the comment, laughing along with his friend. Just for clarification, Estevez just got through wrapping a movie with his father Martin Sheen, so he’s not that unemployed.
But we did find his bit particularly funny and perhaps more sincere on how he felt than any of the other guests there. He said he respected Sheen, not for his body of work, but for his ability to admit his wrongs, laugh about them, and go on. He also thanked him for letting him participate.
We, like Charlie Sheen, wish the best wishes to Patrice O’Neal and his family and hope he makes a full recovery because he is a funny guy. We can see why Charlie got him involved in the roast.
