Well after all the speculation about who would buy Charlie Sheen’s new TV show Anger Management, it was announced today that Fox’s FX Network will be the one taking the honor.
The announcement now officially brings Charlie Sheen back to TV sometime in 2012 with an initial order of up to 10 episodes just to get the ball rolling. Now that may seem a bit cautious, but they must be fairly optimistic because FX Networks John Landgraf said that they will have no issue with ordering 90 more if the show is the success that Sheen hopes it will be. That is quite a promise for a TV comedy that will be in its fledgling season. Many shows don’t even last that long, even if they are able to get past their first time out unscathed. And so Charlie has a lot of motivation to make this work as both an actor and as an active producer.
That’s right! He’ll have full creative control and a stake in its earnings. So it will certainly reflect well or badly on him depending on how it goes. And we certainly hope that he gets a better writing team than he did with his tour. The thing that makes Chuck Lorre so successful in comedy is that he surrounds himself with very talented people with vision. If Charlie can do the same, he has a chance. Of course, FX does not get near the audience that CBS does in pure numbers, but we are guessing that if it even does half as good as Two and Half Men did, FX will be extremely happy with the result.
Charlie says that he will certainly find it challenging to play a guy with anger management issues. But we are concerned that he also has to fill the shoes of the ever popular Jack Nicholson who played the part in the 2003 film that the show is based on. While the name may help bring people in, that might not have been the best idea as the comparisons are likely to come up that could hinder the perception of the show, rather than treating it as its own thing. But hopefully that won’t interfere too much.
There was no specific mention of a release date, but we’d expect it would be around summer or fall before it began its run.
