Charlie Sheen’s Celebrity Roast on Comedy Central finally released a promo of the show that is supposed to take on Two and Half Men when they both air on September 19th. It shows Charlie riding a nuclear missile toward the ground, while wearing a cowboy outfit and riding it like a bucking bronco. The spot is to serve as a teaser for the roast, which seems like it still does not have a guest list.
Of course, the scene with the bomb is lifted almost exactly from the movie Dr. Strangelove or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb which starred comedian Peter Sellers. But it wasn’t Sellers riding the bomb, but another screen legend, Slim Pickens, who many knew for his odd country voice and temperament. The scene is often parodied in comedies including the Simpsons and Jib Jab’s 2004 election video with George Bush and John Kerry. That one featured Bush straddling the weapon.
The symbolism though has given some critics a chance to make comparisons of the scene with that of his career, that it’s going down in flames and will end in a nuclear explosion, or is it a meat explosion? I don’t think it’s that at all. He’s got a new show coming up, potential reconciliation with his ex-wife, and everything going his way. Sure his tour was a bit of a disaster, but in the end, I think he’ll win.
By the way, on the other side of the dial, it’s being reported that producers of Two and Half Men asked Denise Richards, who has expressed interest in being in the roast as well, if she would appear in the season premier of their show. Richards told them no, stating that Charlie would never forgive her if she did. And we could see that. Since they are supposedly in a good place now, there is no need for the waters to be stirred like that. It just seems like Chuck Lorre is still trying to twist the knife, which you’d think he’d be over by now. It’s not like Sheen killed his dog. He’s the one that fired Sheen, not the other way around.
