Charlie may have taken some slams for his tour, but he has been doing some good work in the form of charitable acts in the last week or two. In this case, he has taken time out from his tour on Monday to go on what he calls a recon mission to the tornado ravaged Tuscaloosa, Alabama to see what the damage is for himself, much as President Barack Obama did last week. While he can’t authorize federal funding, he feels that he can still help financially the survivors of the horrible storm front that killed over 300 people in six states.
The actor says that he received a lot of tweets from fans concerning the disaster that urged him to make the visit. Sheen promised he would hold a charity event, either a celebrity baseball game or a show with comedians and musicians to raise money for the devastated area. He told reporters that he wants to do whatever he can to lend compassion, support and hope to the people that had been through so much.
There is no scheduled date for the fundraiser at this time, but in the meantime, he’s put up a site called Torpedoes against Tornados that will take donations for the people affected by the storm. Those donating $100 or more will receive a signed baseball card by Sheen himself. The donations are tax deductible.
Earlier in the week at his San Francisco show, he had taken donations and gave the proceeds of his merchandise sales to Bryan Stow, a paramedic father of two who was badly beaten (and now in a coma) by some Dodger fans outside of Dodger Stadium. The merchandise came to $9000, the people who came to the show offered another $4000, which Sheen matched and threw in another $3000 for a total of $20,000.
We are glad to see he is using his warlock powers for good. Keep it up Charlie.
